Big News for Pune Metro : Swargate-Katraj Extension Set to Begin – Discover the 4 Key Stops!

In a significant development for the city’s transportation infrastructure, the Pune Metro is set to commence work on the highly anticipated Swargate-Katraj extension. This project, which has been in the planning stages for several years, aims to enhance connectivity and convenience for commuters in the region.

Stations Along the Swargate-Katraj Route

The Swargate-Katraj extension will feature a total of four metro stations, each designed to serve key areas and benefit a large number of residents and commuters. Here are the details of the stations:

  • Gultekdi Market Yard: This station will be one of the three initially planned stations along the route. It will provide easy access to the bustling market area and surrounding residential zones.
  • Padmavati: Located in a densely populated area, the Padmavati station will cater to the needs of local residents and students from nearby educational institutions.
  • Katraj: The terminal station of this extension, Katraj will connect the southern parts of Pune to the central areas, significantly reducing travel time and enhancing overall connectivity.
  • Balajinagar: Recently approved as the fourth station on this route, Balajinagar will serve the Balajinagar-Bharati Vidyapeeth area. This addition is expected to benefit a large number of college students and local commuters, ensuring the metro reaches the maximum number of people.

Project Details and Timeline

The Swargate-Katraj extension spans approximately 5.46 kilometers and will be entirely underground. The project was approved by the Government of India in August 2024, with the official ground-breaking ceremony taking place on September 29, 2024. The groundwork for this route is slated to begin in February 2025, with Maha Metro already initiating soil testing and other surveys. The project is anticipated to be completed by February 2029.

Benefits and Impact

The extension is expected to cost around ₹2,954.53 crore and will be fully funded by Maha Metro. The new stations will not only improve connectivity but also reduce traffic congestion in the area. The design of the Swargate station has been optimized to ensure a hassle-free transition between the existing and new lines, considering future expansion requirements.

Community and Government Support

Local MLA Bhimrao Tapkir has been instrumental in pushing for the additional station at Balajinagar, emphasizing the need to ensure the metro benefits the maximum number of people. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has also extended its support, providing the necessary permissions and land for the construction of the new station.

As the Pune Metro continues to expand, this Swargate-Katraj extension is a significant step towards enhancing the city’s public transportation system, making it more efficient and accessible for its growing population.
